with Dementia/Alzheimer’s. They have completed a special
training course and receive ongoing training, in-services and supervision
to help them care and cope with the complexity of the dementia client.
Tips for Care of the Client with Alzheimer’s
- Speak slowly and clearly, making eye contact with the person
- Always
reintroduce yourself by name
- Use gestures and facial expressions when
trying to communicate, smile
- Give short, one sentence explanations
- Repeat instructions exactly
the same way
- Minimize distractions during communication, turn off TV
and radio
- Accept blame if necessary even if a fantasy
- Hold hands and give hugs
to show acceptance
- Do not argue or attempt to reason
- Do not confront
- Do not remind them that they forget
- Do not take things they say or
do personally
- Go with the flow, be patient and cheerful
